Adapted / Specialized Learning Environments
Creating multiple ways for students with diverse learning and communication needs to express themselves

Vaughn Occupational High School is a Chicago Public School serving students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. All students have IEPs and learn in small, highly supported classrooms. Students have a wide range of learning and communication profiles, and benefit most from concrete, hands-on, and differentiated instruction.

Through a partnership with Vaughn, Living Record adapted the Time Capsule experience to meet students at their skill and comprehension levels. Over 10 lessons, students engaged through visual art, storytelling, movement, and supported communication approaches that matched their strengths. Each activity offered multiple entry points, allowing students to participate verbally, visually, or through supported expression. Students created artifacts that reflected who they are, what matters to them, and how they see the world. Through projects like self-portraits, “safe places” collages, and future reflections, they were able to express ideas and experiences in ways that felt accessible and meaningful.

Why It Mattered
The experience gave educators new insight into students’ identities, interests, and ways of communicating—strengthening relationships and classroom community.
